Abstract: In this talk I will sketch the proof of the fact that in every genus and for every prime p there are curves over Q with tame p-torsion. In genus 1, this is something this is quite easy to deduce from the theory of the Tate curve, and I will explain how an explicit version of the theory of hyperelliptic Mumford curves gives this in arbitrary genus. This is joint work with Matthew Bisatt.
